The Road to Hell (Hell's Gate Book 3), by David Weber, Joelle Presby

Entry #3 in the popular Hell's Gate series by 28 times New York Times best-selling author David Weber and Joelle Presby.

The war between magically-gifted Arcana and psionically talented Sharona continues to rage. The dragon-borne Arcanan assault across five universes has been halted at Fort Salby by a desperate defense, but at atrocious cost. One of those costs was the life of Crown Prince Janaki, heir to the newly created Sharonian Empire, who went knowingly to his death in the tradition expected of the House of alirath. And another price will be the sacrifice of his younger sister, Grand Imperial Princess Andrin, now heir of Sharona, for the accords creating the Sharonian Empire require the marriage of the heir to the Crown to wed a Uromathian prince.

Andrin bears her family's Talent, the Glimpses, which show flashes of events yet to come. She knows the accords must be secured . . . and like her brother, she will pay any price, make any sacrifice for her duty to her people.

Sharona's soldiers dig in, facing the Arcanans in a tense standoff which cannot last long. Both sides continue rushing reinforcements towards the front, but how do armies fight wars when they can reach one another only through the portals which join the universes? And far, far behind the front, carried by dragons, a young Voice name Shaylar and her husband Jathmar hurtle deeper and deeper into Arcanan captivity, their only protection the fierce personal honor of the Andaran officer whose men massacred all of their companions in the horrendous misunderstanding which began the entire conflict.

Men and women of honor on both sides must grapple with the terrible costs and deadly secrets of the spreading cataclysm, and in the shadows, those who will balk at neither treason nor murder drive the conspiracies which pour fuel into the furnace. The stakes are high and the pieces are in motion, but there are factors known not even to the conspirators and not even a Calirath can Glimpse the final outcome.

About the Author
With over seven and a half million copies of his books in print and twenty-eight titles on the New York Times bestseller list, David Weber is the science fiction publishing phenomenon of the new millennium. In the hugely-popular Honor Harrington series, the spirit of C.S. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O’Brian’s Master and Commander lives on—into the galactic future. Books in the Honor Harrington and Honoverse series have appeared on twenty-one bestseller lists, including those of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and USA Today. While Weber is best known for his spirited, modern-minded space operas, he is also the creator of the Oath of Swords fantasy series and the Dahak saga, a science fiction and fantasy hybrid. Weber is has also engaged in a steady stream of best-selling collaborations including his Starfire Series with Steve White, which produced the New York Times bestseller The Shiva Option among others. Weber’s collaboration with alternate history master Eric Flint led to the bestselling 1634: The Baltic War. His Honorverse collaborations with Flint in the Crown of Slave series are also highly popular, with latest entry, Cauldron of Ghosts, becoming a New York Times bestseller. His planetary adventure novels with military science fiction ace and multiple national best-selling author John Ringo includes the March to the Stars and We Few. Finally, Weber’s collaboration with Linda Evans and now Joelle Presby produced the Multiverse series. David Weber makes his home in South Carolina with his wife and children.

Joelle Presby attended the United States Naval Academy. Robert A. Heinlein went there, she says, so it seemed like a good idea at the time. After commissioning, she studied how to find and kill submarines at Naval Postgraduate School and began dating a submarine officer. During her six and a half years of naval service, nations with significant submarine fleets stubbornly refused to go to war with the United States. She has lived in France, Cameroon, the United States, and Japan. She and her husband, the submarine officer, live in Virginia and claim they would rather live with hurricanes than move again.

Long wait worth it
By Ray Givan
It was a horribly long wait for this, the third book in he multiverse series. I sincerely hope t5he 2wait for the next one will be considerably shorter. It took me some time to adjust to the new "co-author's" style. The book itself is good, tied up ends from second book nicely. One of the critics complained thaqt the villains are uniformly bad and that this isn't true to life. That critic needs more life experience. Does he really think real villains have good characters. Sure. Hitler was a vegetarian and loved dogs. Mao wrote poetry. Hirohito was a marine biologist, And on and on. . . It's good to see the good people in Arcana getting into the game and the bad people in Sharonia finally doing really bad stuff. Civil wars in the offing? I believe there could be as many as seven or eight books in this series, if it is ever finished. Aside from that, no complaints.

Good Enough Until the Next One.
By Bernard Finnigan
Thank god that wait is over. Good news is that after nine years we have a novel that moves every old plot thread along and starts several new ones that we didnt know were coming.
For starters, the addition of the new co-author is seamless. There's no difference in style.
Then, after two books we finally get to see Arcana. Shaylar and her husband arrive in the home universe and meet a whole new gaggle of Arcanians. Threads like this make up for the fact that nothing really happens with the Arcanian Expeditionary Force invasion of the Sharonian universes. Whereas there's definite progress made on that front, and promises of a lot more to come, the novels ends with Harshu still where he was in book two. There's a lot of shenanigans behind the scenes, and Harshu ends up with the tables turned, I was really hoping for another battle royale between Sharonian and Arcanian military for control of the Hell's Gate Chain. The plot advancement we are given definitely makes sense, and is a definite advancement of the storyline, I just wanted one more bit of ummph.
But thats the unpredictability of the series. Whereas its been promised as a white-knuckle military blow-out between magic and science, that is selling the whole premise short. The REAL plot complications are occurring on the home planets, where on Arcania we see a lot more of the Mythrian coup attempt that we first heard about in Book one (and we finally see Vos Hoven again, bringing his story to a close), and on Sharonia there's an out-of-left-field surprise between the Ternathia and Uromathia cold war, which is the grand finale action sequence of the novel, revealing that the magic vs science gimmick was likely a bait and switch the entire time, and now the real story begins. That makes the novel worthwhile, so long as we dont have to wait NINE YEARS for the next one. Just give us Book 4 in a year or so, and Book 3 will make a fine transitional story. Enough to keep us happy and still wanting more.
And by the way, the cover art is a vast improvement.

Finally the Next Book in the Series Has Arrived. Fortunately it is a Wonderful Read
By Observer of the Scene
Thank Big Frank the next book in the series has finally appeared. I was entranced for the story when I read the first two books and have been waiting impatiently and hoping I didn't die of old age before the next one arrived. Hurrah, it is even better than the second one and carries the story along at quite a brisk pace. The books are so filled with details of interest that I really suggest that you reread the first two before you attack the third one. Of course the story is still a great read by itself but there are so many tie-ins that you will flounder a bit without connecting the earlier dots. I find the contrast of science against magic to be an amazingly intriguing aspect of the book that hasn't been explored before.
