Gary van Warmerdam is the creator of PathwayToHappiness.com, an interactive website with lessons for changing beliefs that drive negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. In 1994, due to his own unhappiness with work and emotional drama in his relationships, Gary became motivated to learn about how his beliefs affected his emotions and decision making. He studied extensively with Dr. Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements (a favorite of Oprah Winfrey) and other best-selling books. Gary realized that with a proper approach he could gain greater control over his mind and emotions. With practice he developed the power and the freedom to choose the peace and happiness he was seeking. Do you want a guide to a better life?

Mindworks is an in depth look at what makes us tick. I have found countless gems in this book about relationships and emotions. Gary's step by step introduction into how we view ourselves has really helped me find that what we believe really shapes how we see the people and experiences in everyday life. There is a path to happiness; it takes some awareness as to how to get there. By looking honestly at the people in our lives and at ourselves, it seems that everyone has good intentions. It's the judgments that we hold that get in the way of that view.
I have found Gary's work to be of great value in creating a better life for myself and the people i love. By changing my perspective, their perspective of me changes and i am allowed to see who they really are. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to improve the way they feel about themselves and in turn, the way they see the people they love.

THE ANSWER TO MY PRAYERS!!! (The formula I once dreamed of)

I LOOKED and LOOKED for books that would give me a practical way to change the CORE of my beliefs that were causing me emotional drama but I kept running into books that would only tell me what I was doing wrong without a solution. Gary's book has a particular way of "dumbing down" all the tricky ideas in our heads that interfere with our happiness and it goes exactly to the root of the problem which no other book I've read has done for me. I love the clarity and practical "formulas" he gives you to overcome any ideas that might be causing you fears. I'm from El Salvador and English is my second language but I understood it very well. I love this book and I am so thankful for founding it!!! If you are looking to put and end to whatever is causing you emotional pain this is your book.

If you have struggled to find a solution to feeling good in your own skin, I highly recommend this book. For the first time I am able to actually look forward to reading more each day about how to learn to live in harmony with others and begin to understand just how "unaware" I have been in my own life.

An excellent introduction to practical confocal microscopy

This book provides a very "user-friendly" guide to beginners in the field of confocal microscopy. As introduction the author reviews in a compact and accesible manner basic issues of microscopy (including optics, the limits of microscopy, imaging modes and the parts of a microscope) and microscopy hardware always pointing out the advantages and drawbacks inherent to confocal microscopy. The main section of the book describes how to use a confocal microscope in detail, from collecting images to image presentation and publication, dealing along the way with topics such as interpretation of images, understanding fluorescence and fluorescent probes, specialized confocal microscopy techniques and live cell imaging. Appendices discuss further information that can be accessed through further reading or microscopy resources in the internet, as well as a succint evaluation of all commercial confocal microscopy brands currently available, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.

The book has been written with a thorough care to produce an enjoyable and didactic text, containing many hints and "how to" procedures that have been personally very helpful to me when I started working with this technique, being completely novel to ANY class of microscopy.

The wealth of information available in its pages make it a good reference book on the subject. Indeed, we have adopted it in my laboratory as the standard for our confocal applications.

Very superficial

This book was recommended to me by the folks at the microscopy core in my university. I was hoping for an accessible technical primer on confocal microscopes with emphasis on the hardware and the underlying optical theory. Unfortunately, although there is an introduction to the hardware and a little bit of optics theory, these sections are very superficial and don't really add to your understanding of the technology (you'll be better off reading the the documentation on the manufacturer's websites, especially nikonU). The aim of this book seems to be to make sure you know what buttons to push when you are in front of the microscope, but not necessarily for you to understand what is that you are doing. The book is not bad. I would trade the section on software (that seems dated) for a good introduction to confocal optics and a more complete guide on how to make sure the hardware is optimally set up (key to get good images) which is also lacking.

About the Author
Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) was a student of philosophy, musicology, psychology, and sociology at Frankfurt where he later became Professor of Philosophy and Sociology and Co-Director of the Frankfurt School. During the war years he lived in Oxford, in New York, and in Los Angeles, continuing to produce numerous books on music, literature, and culture.

Still a nourishing display of conceptual power.

Although out-of-print this is an event in the history of music comparable to primary musical works.It had to be Theodor Adorno a consummate intellect that created a new mode of contemplating contemporary art, music simply being the realm he knew more intimately,literature a close second. His prolific student from the late Fifties, Jurgen Habermas once said of Adorno, that he created theory spontaneously, simply within the course of a discussion, adept at synthesizing his thoughts as he spoke. But Adorno's importance for contemporary expression was assured,in that Adorno brought the complexity of philosophic,social and political thought to music. Something hardly done prior, and is only now within the past ten years beginning to be realized. See numerous studies on Adorno and his approach to speaking about music. To read the "Philosophy of Modern Music" is to understand Adorno's departures for his thought is the most exposed. Written in short cursive, aphorisitic-like paragraphs, almost approaching a sketch of a thought is to reveal a complexity, but one which engages his subject. The two polar opposites here are composers, Arnold Schoenberg(representing the progressive elements in music), and Igor Stravinsky(representing the backward-looking retrogressive elements). Adorno had considered the private artist working in seclusion as the highest form of rebellion, of subversion, for Adorno had contempt for the marketplace and how that magnetized and transformed art. Something of the market, in the late Forties was prevalent in jazz and film. Had Adorno lived into the age of computers and simulation,he would have seen to full extent how his thought has been realized in ever purified forms. Adorno thought Schoenberg's discovery of the 12-Tone dodecaphonic compositional method as a sign of progress. 12-Tone in a profound way was a synthesis, a conduit of the theoretical advancements of the history of music.It was both a beginning and an endpoint. But Schoenberg's method, althought quite new and unfinished allowed for all the parameters of music to be defined and developed, "Total Organization of the Elements of Music" is one paragraph here or section, "Differetiation and Coarseness" yet another referring to thinking about sound, as a sculptor would of his/her materials, shapting them, giving them form and direction. Stravinsky contrarywise indulged in looking backward, at the folksongs of his native Russia for music materials to be manipulated and the projection of sound without its deep attenuation. A view that is subjective now in retrospect,for Stravinsky was a grand orchestrator and a craftsman. But in Stravinsky, in particular his early period of the marvelously powerful ballet music, sound is pulverized,and is forced into suppressed forms,usually ashifting alternating suite of pieces,refocusing our short attention spans as required and, all in the projection of an image, a screeen for which the ballet takes place. But Adorno had takened issue with Stravinsky's subject matter as well as his technical means, a puppet in "Petrouska" one given over to a master without hope nor recourse.Likewise the "Rite of Spring" a virgin is simply sacrificed without recourse and we have the human image portraying the inevitability of natural forces, something Europe was about to experience first hand with the rise of fascism. Again to my mind this is all relative, for these festures I find in both composers oeuvre. Still I find a conceptual power in Adorno,one that still nourishes today in the mileau of after-postmodernity.

About the Author
Cecil Frances Alexander was born in 1818 near Dublin, Ireland. She began writing poetry at the age of nine and went on to write hundreds of poems and hymns. Among her best-known hymns are "All Things Bright and Beautiful," "Once in Royal David's City," and "There is a Green Hill Far Away," all of which appeared in "Hymns for Little Children", published in 1848. She died in 1895 and was remembered as a woman of great kindness and generosity.

The son of New Yorker writer Brendan Gill grew up meeting the likes of Ezra Pound and Ernest Hemingway. A Yale education led to a job at prestigious J. Walter Thompson Advertising. This is a simple and sweet read. The author is sometimes a bit over-the-top ...

I wanted to give 4.5 stars but since that wasn't possible I felt 5 was most appropriate. This is a simple and sweet read. The author is sometimes a bit over-the-top in his self-deprecation (he can be awfully unforgiving of his faults, flaws and mistakes!) but he was so genuine that I couldn't help but find myself really liking him. It was Mr. Gill's sincerity and vulnerability that won me over and I found myself feeling truly invested in his journey.

*SPOILER ALERT* I had expected some sort of lottery win-type of ending, where the hero is restored to his former glory, or whatever, but it was satisfyingly "normal". It was Mr. Gill's sincerity and vulnerability that won me over and I found myself feeling truly invested in his journey.

a good read if you need to believe in people again

I had to review this book because the people on Amazon who gave it one star seem a little harsh in their criticism. Yes the book is about 63 year-old Michael Gill who hangs out at the Starbucks and eventually gets a job there. Sounds simple enough, right? But remember - the man is 63 years old, has been in upper-management practically his whole life, and his family comes from money. In other words, the man has the outlook of society owing him - not necessarily the other way around. This is where Starbucks comes in.

I found the book to be delightful. The only issue I had with it were that the people that worked at the Starbucks were so friendly! I have not experienced this at the majority of Starbucks I've been to. And, having worked in retail most of my life, I could relate how nerve-racking it can be to run a register for the first time (remember the man is 63) and I can't imagine what it would be like to make drinks with people shouting things at you - let alone trying to be friendly to the customers.

I found this book to be a heart-warming story about a rich man who finds that there is another side to people & how they live their lives besides what he's known his whole life. I found the writing to be normal- just like a guy who hangs out at the Starbucks - and I found the editing to be well done. The book gives you hope in people & how an ordinary day can change your life for the better.

In the acknowledgements the author gives a thanks to Tom Hanks who played his character in the movie version of the book. I Googled it & it currently sites the movie as in development. Tom Hanks would be a perfect person to play Michael Gill. I just hope that the movie sticks to the books' facts.

An Enjoyable Read

As a Starbucks partner of about the same age as MGG was when the book was written, I could empathize and identify with much of his situation. Starbucks has been a wonderful and welcoming experience and it was fun to compare my story with his.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the writing was somewhat "elementary" and his continued referencing to his former life got a little tiresome.
But, an enjoyable, quick read.
