The series' art direction centers on American music and counterculture, especially the beat and jazz movements of the 1940s-1960s and the early rock era of the 1950s-1970s, which the original soundtrack by Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts recreates.[1] Cowboy Bebop was a commercial success both in Japan and international markets, notably in the United States. After this reception, Sony Pictures released a feature film, Knockin' on Heaven's Door (2001), to theaters worldwide and followed up with an international DVD release. Two manga adaptations were serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Asuka Fantasy DX.

Cowboy Bebop: Illustrations ~The Wind~

This is a high quality paperback book. It measures 9"(23cm) x 11 3/4"(30cm) x 1/2"(15mm) with 144 pages. I have rarely seen a paperback with a dust jacket before. It is printed on heavy glossy paper. Most pictures are color. The ones that aren't color never had any - pencil sketches and the like. It has sketches from when they were developing the characters (Originally Ed was a boy.) Most pages have comments from the artist with English translations. Most pictures are not just lifted from the show. There are many pictures I have never seen online. Two things I don't like are that sometimes the commentary is in the corners of the pictures and that some pictures span two pages. While these pictures look good that big, you have the spine of the book in the middle.

Of course, this book is only going to appeal to serious fans of the show, especially at this price. If you are such a fan you won't regret this purchase.

Sixty-nine-year-old Mama King has been suffering from a series of ailments. Her daughters, both in the United States, send money to move Mama King to the Frangipani House, a place on the island for "aged old folk - black women...forty-three of them." As Mama King's health is restored, all she wants is to get away from the confinement and control of Miss Trask, the "Matron." Mama King, a strong woman who raised her daughters without a husband and her grandchildren without much help from their mothers, realizes that the boredom in this place will kill her before her health fails. Here at Frangipani House she misses "her faithful friends, work and hardship" and is heard mumbling to herself: "I am going lazy-handed to meet my Maker. Me mother dead with sod in her hair. Me father dead with rice grass underneath him. And me I sittin' till me bones get sore waitin'." So Mama King sits, knowing her clothes are disappearing, her letters to her daughters aren't being posted, and the injections the matron gives her are no good. Woven through the narrative are Mama King's memories, tales from the past that interconnect family and friends, and her plans for escape. Good Addition to the Library of the Young Reader

"Eight Ate" by Marvin Terban. Illustrated by Giulio Maestro. Sub-titled, "A Feast of Homonym Riddles". Clarion Books, 1982.
This book plays on the wealth of homonyms (words which sound alike but mean different things) in the English language. First, a question, (i.e. a riddle) is asked, and then the answer, dependent upon a homonym, is given. For example, on the back cover, the riddle is: "What do you call a smelly chicken?"
Answer, playing on the homonyms: "A foul fowl!"
The entire book is filled with this type of word play: the riddle, with the answer in homonyms nicely illustrated by Giulio Maestro. All of the clever use of words makes for funny reading aloud. The illustrations keep the attention of the children who are too young read, even though they may not fully understand the joke embedded in the homonyms. This book is a worthwhile addition to the library of the young reader.

Eight Ate, created by Marvin Terban, was created as a teaching game, in one of his English classes. This book is useful for learning the difference between words that sound the same, but are spelled differently. The jokes and riddles are described by pictures to give clues to the answers. This book is a great way for kids to understand the different meanings behind words that sound the same. As someone who confuses they're and there, I found this book fun and helpful, and I'm in college! This would also help teachers in the Language Arts field. By creating fun use for words, Terban brings forth knowledge needed to understand the English Language.

Laugh out loud funny for the whole family!!!

Normally I don't write reviews. After searching for a book for my son, I stumbled upon this one. He pulls this out every few days and takes a read as if it is new information. I just love the way this book makes him want to learn and know more about words. He has thus graduated to similes and metaphors and he is just 6!!! This book is in black and white, which for us adds to the mystery of determining what the pictures are saying. The ease of simple sentences is another plus. We carry this with us to extended family and enjoy the riddle-like questions. This turned into a full fledged game against groups of family members at once! I'm glad to say I wasn't the only one dusting the cobwebs off my brain while racing against younger opponents. What a surprise! Most delightful and impressive!! Would like to see more with the same structure. Also, a note that having the answers at the bottom of each page sure makes a little fellow feel very in charge of his knowledge. Well done!!! So grateful for such a quality book. I am about to order other texts by the author. Don't change a thing!

2 Hearts for Caleb & Faith

THE AMERICAN LOVER was a sweet story about two people hurt deeply by love in two very different ways, both determined never to fall in love again as the potential heartbreak just isn’t worth it. But as Faith and Caleb get to know one another, feelings become involved that make it harder for them to stay on their loveless paths.

Sadly, THE AMERICAN LOVER just wasn’t for me. The dual POVs didn’t work that well, with quite a bit of repetition occurring between the POV switches. I can understand Caleb’s issues and insecurities, given that his wife cheated on him and said some very nasty things to him when he caught her in the act, but Faith is also insecure. In my opinion she’s overly insecure, which is odd because she had a really good marriage with Drew before he died. Like I said, it’s a sweet story, but I found that it took me forever to finish it. I just couldn’t get into it and thought about not finishing it several times.

THE COURAGE TO START OVER AGAIN

An enjoyable read about having the courage to start over after unexpected loss. The characters seemed believable to me; and the story progressed at at a pleasant, if predictable pace. The chapters alternated often in point of view; allowing the reader a vantage into the mindset of both lead characters. The story line is about two basically decent people, who emotionally have had the wind knocked out of them. When we meet them they are both using their careers for self validation. The cliche of the handsome executive being stunned after meeting a brilliant, competent but drab young woman is alive and well here. What might be a bit of a let down, is the lack of any major life shattering situation so popular in today's romantic fiction. Still, this book is a pleasant, page turning romance......

wanted to love it, but it left me feeling flat !

After reading the Starr series I was excited to read the newest book. right from the start this one seemed to lag a little for me and it was hard being American to read an American male that was clearly not so American, too many things that were clearly English terms and not so American English. while I could get past that, the plot just didnt sit right for me, and at times I was hopeful it would pick up and it just didnt. every writer has a story that can fall flat and while I wanted to love this book, I just couldnt. It didnt reach out and grab me and make me want to read it again and again. For me it was blah !

Update AUGUST 2013: The new 2013 edition is even better, with lots of added information and photos. Although both are great, the second edition gives you more for the same money - make sure to get the expanded edition.

Great historical details intertwined with technical information - everything I need to identify just about every FN and Browning pistol, including those allusive oddballs. This is not my first book from this publisher with the funny name. Wet Dog Publications is a true boutique-style publisher that focuses on good information and great quality pics. No wonder they only put out one title a year, well worth the wait and expense.

Flowers and Their
Messages is
primarily a book of the Mother, where Sri Aurobindo's
touch is undoubtedly felt. The spiritual significances of flowers are, we
believe, a completely new way of looking at them. It may also be called a book
of the Integral Yoga, for the Mother used flowers as an aid in our
self-development to realise the highest possibilities that await us. A
conscious and intimate relationship with flowers can help us to experience a
beautiful communion with the Divine. Sri Aurobindo once remarked: "The
plants are very psychic but they can express it only by silence and
beauty." Here the Mother has made of that beauty an eloquent and potent
expression.

 

This revised and enlarged edition has in the
Introduction a few more passages from the writings of the Mother and Sri
Aurobindo. The section 'Nature, the Mother and Flowers' traces her sensitivity
to Nature and her intuitive work of giving the spiritual significances of the
flowers that were offered to her. Two other lists have been inserted: the first
is a compilation of some of the names previously used by the Mother; the second
gives the corresponding name to hibiscus flowers first given for Auroville. We have added one more flower that Mother named
but was not included till now. This Hibiscus appears on page 115.

 

As in earlier editions the order of botanical names
is followed, but these are often shortened by giving only the generic name. In

Flowers and Their Messages unfolds the spiritual secrets of many of the world's most important flowers, both of temperate and tropical regions. As a practitioner in the field of yogic and Ayurvedic healing, I find the book particularly helpful for showing us how flowers work on the mind and soul.

The author, Mother Mira of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram was one of the most remarkable women teachers of the twentieth century. No other western woman residing in India has ever received the degree of adulation and respect that she gained, to whom even Indira Gandhi came for guidance. Mother Mira was the spiritual partner of Sri Aurobindo, one of the towering figures of modern India's spiritual renaissance, and carried on his mission through the Sri Aurobindo Ashram that she directed.

The Mother, as she is called, was an accomplished yogini, mystic and occultist. This book reflects not only her understanding of plants but of the psychic realms to which they are connected. It contains drawings, pictures and relevant quotes from Sri Aurobindo. It is not just a book about flowers but shows how flowers symbolize the unfoldment of the Divine consciousness within us. It shows us how to read the Divine language of form and color, not only in flowers but in the unfoldment of our own inner being.

Review of Bukeley's 'Wondering Brain'

This work serves effectively as an introduction to neuroscience of atypical activities like dreaming, sexuality, creativity and meditation. These experiences are all link by a religious studies perspective. The book contains an introduction to both computational neuroscience and religious studies, making it incredibly accessible. The author also introduces many of the key modern thinkers in both fields; both Damasio the neuroscientist and Doniger the religious scholar receive several long passages of admirable quotation. Steven Pinker, Freud, and others are also introduced.

This work is not highly organized or easy to use for research purposes. It is a series of essays best suited to leisurely reading. This is a layman's introduction.

Filled with perspectives and cross-perspectives

Examples of these key issues include "How Religious was the American Revolution?", "How did the factory and the city influence American religion?", and "How did religion in America contribute to the rise of the civil rights movement?" A scholarly, analytical book filled with perspectives and cross-perspectives, Critical Issues In American Religious History is very highly recommended for anyone with a serious interest in learning more about the history of religion in the America experience.

Great Book!

This book is being used as a text for my class in Church History. It is a compilation of essays and select historical documents from US history. It is easily understood and very readable.

Stick around for the 2nd Half

Originally, I gave this book quite a bad review. I have adjusted this review up to 3 stars however, as I have actually found it increasingly useful in the past few months. Still, the first half of this book can be painfully droll...though I love history, no one cares how far Evangelist X rode his horse back from Boston. The 2nd half however, becomes rather pertinent as it begins to examine racism, the controversy surrounding evolution, religious pluralism, the decline of mainline-protestantism, and other such contemporary topics of interest. Not bad, but don't try to read this puppy through...it's really more a reference book; you should regard and use it as such.
