Both ancient sources and modern research agree that astronomy and celestial divination arose in Babylon. Only in the late nineteenth century, however, did scholars begin to identify and decipher the original Babylonian sources, and the process of understanding those sources has been long and difficult.This volume presents recent work on Babylonian celestial divination and on the Greek inheritors of the Babylonian tradition. Both philological and mathematical work are included. The essays shed new light on all of the known textual sources, including the omen series Enuma Anu Enlil, which contains omens from as far back as the early second or even third millennium, and the earliest personal horoscopes, from about 400 B.C., as well as the Astronomical Diaries, ephemerides, and other observational and mathematical texts. One essay concerns astronomical papyri that confirm the extensive transmission of Babylonian methods into Greek; a study of Ptolemy's lunar theory suggests that Ptolemy relied more on his own observations than previously thought; and an analysis of Theon's commentary on Ptolemy's Handy Tables shows that Theon explicated their meaning both conscientiously and competently.Contributors : Asger Aaboe, Alan C. He left the main roads at times, piloting the Buick at high speeds for long stretches in the darkness across the desert scrub land.He and Earlene had no choice but to get back to Los Angeles. He knew the FBI would have their apartment under surveillance, so he and Earlene couldn't even stop there for a change of clothes. But if they could just make it through the night, he had a friend who could get them some money and the documents they would need to escape across the border into Mexico. Warjac knew someone had ratted on them. He wasn't sure if there was anyone he could trust. So they pulled into a parking lot north of Los Angeles and got some sleep on the beach. Warjac was driving along Sunset Boulevard when two special agents from the FBI saw the Buick convertible and forced them to stop. "Get out of the car with your hands up," one of the agents said. Warjac, my father, was under arrest.

You can't make this stuff up!

As an amateur mob historian I noticed this book about an interesting character from, of all places, Fort Wayne Indiana. OK, so it's not Chicago, but I fugured the location still might make for a curious read for this midwesterner so I purchased it. What a pleasant surprise! An authentic, well-researched first hand account from the son of who may just be the most interesting man caught up in the golden age of the underworld. Mr. Swain poured his heart out in this brutally honest account of how, with the right combination of charm and audacity, a one-time small-town hustler can run under the radar with some of the most notorious names in the business. As I was reading I could not help but think that this is the Forrest Gump of the dark side -- the guy who is somehow there when some of the biggest names and notorious events of the 50's and 60's were taking place. Spoiler alerts with every chapter, so I won't say any more than you won't be disappointed. Just waiting for someone with the right connections to make this into a screenplay. This would make a great movie or mini-series.

This book documents the mis-spent life of a youth caught up in crime. The results of his actions have a profoundly negative effect on his son Greg Swaim, who authors this book. The book is well researched and follows the life of a man who led multiple, and secretive, lives. His criminal activities led him to many contacts with underworld characters and entertainment stars. He is apprehended by police on several occasions, but, somehow seems to avoid any significant penalty. This brings up the question as to the possibility he was an undercover agent for some law enforcement agency. Warjac appears to be an intelligent person, but, not smart enough to know right from wrong.
A good read about the life of a criminal.

This is a poorly written and organized book. You could learn more from wikipedia. It makes frequent reference to Buddhist texts with obscure sanskrit or pali titles, without explanation to what those texts are or why they are important. We don't know who follows those texts and who does not. This book gives you little concrete information to base your understanding Buddhism off of and is mostly vague stories and vaguely substantiated claims. The organization is haphazard and opaque. I was very frustrated studying this as a college text and don't feel I learned much.

In this captivating study, Messerschmidt talks to these boys in depth about their experiences, and he learns what they actually did and experienced in their lives that resulted in sexual or assaultive violence, or nonviolence. Prior to this study there was no information or empirical research on the agency of the adolescent-male offender, or on how such agency relates to masculinity and violence/nonviolence. Nine Lives is also unique because of its examination of how teenage males construct, interpret, and attempt to comprehend their own lives, and the world around them.Messerschmidt addresses the following chief questions: Why do some boys engage in violence and some boys do not? And, why do those boys who engage in violence commit different types? This differential use of violence is examined as a resource for "doing masculinity" in certain situations and under specific circumstances. Although none of the boys in Nine Lives were involved in school shootings, their life stories--and the social processes surrounding their violence--are relevant to understanding the school killings from Moses Lake, Washington to Littleton, Colorado.

This book is a series of case studies concerning how violence (be it physical, sexual, ect) is enacted and percieved by the young males who commit them. The cases are indepth interviews which provide at times shocking views into what these youth were thinking when they committed these acts. A must read for anyone studying Masculinities or male violence.

INTRODUCTION ONLY

If you are looking for a book that contains building or riding tips for fixed gear this is not the book for you. I educated myself on fixed gear bikes before building my own and i was hoping for a book that had build tips. The riding tips given were all comon sense or pure insanity. This book taught me nothing and a few youtube videos would give you the same info in a shorter time span. I do state now that fixed gear is more practical and gives you a better work out than any geared bike so pleae ignore the previous reviews. This book was money wasted for me but if you know nothing about fixed gear it may be the perfect book for you...

Some Good Advice, Some Strange and Wordy Writing...

Some aspects of this book would be good for absolute beginners who know nothing about bikes in general, but others sections leave out essential explanations that are required for understanding what is being discussed.

As an avid mountain biker, I think that I understood what the author was trying to say about gearing recommendations, but the writing was wordy and esoteric:

"fixed gear mountain bikes have adequate ground clearance and low gears. What’s important is that a low gear will allow you to come down quicker from the mountain, with less resistance, considering it can’t go very fast."

This book still gets 3 stars because it does have some good basic information for newbies.

This short guide is the perfect introduction to an old concept that has become quite popular.

Read all of it. While some of the points made in this guide may seem obvious, they all combine to make a well balanced overview. If you skip around, or over points, you will assuredly miss some important advise and information.

Pay special attention to the safety points such as "Skid Stopping" that is discussed late in the book. Skid stopping is definitely not the way to go when it can permanently damage your knees.

If you have become intrigued by the though of a fixed gear "Fixie" bike then you absolutely should get this well laid out informative guide first.
