A book written to be sold to students who don't have a choice

This guy used to teach our communications classes. Initially, his only book was on a subject he claimed hadn't been written about, and that the money went back to the department. Since, a few dozen books have been written on the subject, and he went on to write several books that are all written about by many others, and making them required readings for his classes. He also teaches as a different university now, so, that should say something. He was the department chair and is now an associate professor. His class teaching was always very out of date at best and completely inaccurate at worst. Look at the cover; this is a book about media and it looks like it was released 15 years ago. It's a book made to be forced on students to generate sales and little else.

Sigh......another darn trilogy.

I happen to like this author and I have enjoyed other books that are part of her Stolen Bride series, but those books pretty much are stand alone and you can enjoy them without reading any others, but this one you cannot. I was intrigued by the time travel aspect of this story and was looking forward to a good read, but after about the first few chapters it became kind of boring. Most of the book was about sex, which is not all bad but I read Highlander romance books for the rich history, colorful descriptions of every day life, and the intense conflict that the warrior aspect brings to the story. I never got that breathless anticipation with this book and we are just left hanging at the end. You have no choice but to buy the next two books in order to know what happens to Emma and Logan. We are given a synopsis of each book at the end of this one and if had read those to start with I probably would have rethought my purchase of this book. It's not a bad read, but it's not her best.

I have read tons of romances over the years, and this has to be one of the hottest. The sexy hero speaks his mind and admits his feelings. It's so nice to read a romance where both characters are real and talk to each other without misunderstanding. The mystery of his past and what he protects is just icing on the cake. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. Will our heroine stay or find a way back to our time? I know what I would do, learn Gaelic!!

To me this story is less about Time travel then it is about Sex. Hardly a page goes by they are not in the Sex mode. This book is as close to being a erotic book then it is about romance. I wish they had labeled it as such.

Truly disappointing as the real story is about a chapter long.I know I won't be buying this author's books anymore,

It's another hot night...

This is Frank Miller's second Sin City story. While it doesn't quite match The Hard Goodbye, it's a damn fine example of comics noir in it's own right. The lead character this time around is Dwight, but fans of Marv will be pleased to know that he shows up here in a supporting role. This story takes place prior to, and concurrently with, "The Hard Goodbye". In fact, you can see Marv enacting some scenes from "The Hard Goodbye" in the background of panels here. Anyway, the story is about how Dwight's ex-girlfriend Ava comes and asks him for help. I don't want to give away the story, but it may seem a bit familiar to fans of film noir. Despite what may seem like a predictable storyline, I loved it because it is so well told and the art is beautiful. This is not one of the stories that is being adapted for the Sin City motion picture, but the sequel to this book, The Big Fat Kill is in the movie.

"I've Got Too Much To Do To Let Myself Die"

Simpler than other volumes in the series, "A Dame To Kill For" is still a cool, dark slice of comic book noir -- imagine Eisner's "Spirit" onscreen, as directed by the Coens in a more serious mood.

This may be my favorite of the books (though trying to pick a favorite "Sin City" yarn is like trying to select a favorite Beatles album). It encapsulates everything I like about Miller's work: beautiful black-and-white illustrations with an emphasis on venetian blinds; cigarette smoke; shattered glass and dangerous curves; twisty storylines that pop in on one another; hot mamas and serious ultraviolence.

Plus, it contains my favorite moment in the entire series: Dwight, shot and seriously wounded by the murderous harlot he loved, is being raced away from a crime scene by Marv (who has a nice supporting role here). Marv says Dwight won't survive unless they get to the nearest hospital; Dwight, a bloody mess, insists on being taken somewhere further away and delivers the line of dialogue that best sums up the ethos of "Sin City" : "I'll make it. I won't die. I've got too much I have to do to let myself die." Sweet.

Love and death and grey all over...

Sin City may be black ink on white paper, but it's nothing without the grey. The characters in this book are grey--all over.

A Dame to Kill For is the story of Dwight. Dwight is a good guy with 2 bad habits--booze & broads. But he's sober now. He's taking great pictures of husbands doing nasty things to women who aren't their wives in order to make a living as a private-eye. Dwight is damaged, but on the mend--until Ava shows up. Then it all gets messy. Really messy.

This is the 2nd tale of Sin City and about mid-way through the story Marv, the star of the first book, makes a guest appearance. This book stands completely on its own from book 1 (The Hard Goodbye). However, Marv's story in The Hard Goodbye begins to intertwine with Dwight's and Miller throws in a few cameos for those who read The Hard Goodbye.

This is probably my favorite Sin City yarn. I love them all, but in my opinion creator Frank Miller found his stride in book 1 then ran with it in spades with this book.

And for those folks delving into the world of Sin City because of the 2005 film, this book will be a special treat cuz it's the prequel to Dwight's story in The Big Fat Kill, in which Clive Owen, Michael Clarke Duncan & Rosario Dawson starred in the 2005 film. Do yourself a favor and throw down the cash for this book now. Trust me, $12 is peanuts for the all entertainment packed in these pages.

Philanthropy is a complex and nuanced art

Rather than just giving charity to the poor on an ongoing basis, philanthropy aspires to do something more lasting and radical, according to Peter Frumkin in this book. Philanthropy allows donors to use private funds to create social and political change, or locate and support important social innovations, or achieve a small measure of equity through the simple redistribution of resources.

The act of giving inevitably raises questions of effectiveness, accountability and legitimacy. Effectiveness depends on the extent of the donor's success in achieving their goals. Accountability is a complex matter because giving is often done in private, but this may make the process non-transparent to many different stake-holders who are affected by the results of the giving. Legitimacy involves the difficult question of whether anyone has the right to complain about how donors spend their own money, or alternatively whether wealthy people should be allowed to exercise power on their own pet projects in an undemocratic manner.

The author discusses ways in which philanthropic value is created, theories of change, leverage and scale, different styles of giving, short-term versus long-term giving, different types of foundations and vehicles through which philanthropy can be conducted, and ways in which the strategic value of giving can be maximised.

The book is likely to be of interest to anyone who wants to make a difference in the world through giving, but has encountered at least one situation in which the outcome of giving has not matched up to the expectation. While giving at first seems to be a straightforward matter of handing over money, philanthropy is in fact a complex and nuanced art that requires a great degree of research and strategic thinking if you want to maximise the effectiveness of your efforts. I highly recommend this book as the best one on the subject that I am aware of.

Useful framework for those concerned about their giving's effectiveness

I found this book helpful for framing various considerations in how to make giving more strategic. The vast majority of books out there are targeted to those with substantial means only. This book is more accessible to those having more modest resources, though not exclusively so.

For me, I found the topic of timing donations to be the most enlightening, though I would guess any single donor might find any of the five primary concerns as instructive depending on where they are in their giving concerns.

Overall, this was worth the read and adds something important to the resources on giving available.

More ricklets, bigger and better

Wow, wonder ricklets this time! Craze's adventures continue, the new tavern, his need to prove himself worthy, his weird and wonderful associates and trusted friends... Well done, M. Pax. Book 3 of your series is certainly not a disappointment. I am left to wonder if Craze will ever achieve his goals.
Just when the dust settles on Pardeep, the Lepper opens up and tourists flock in, Craze has yet another hurdle to leap. His family. The very people who betrayed him on his home planet, kicked him out.
Word has spread that Craze is a success, and now he's besieged by his own people who have nowhere else to go.
But that's all I dare say.
If you haven't read any of the Backworlds series, please do so now.
Entertaining, easy reads. Characters are more fleshed-out, pacing is great.
Keep the series coming, please, M. Pax. I await book 4.

Sci-Fi with Heart, Humor and Imagination

In Boomtown Craze, Craze has grown from being a Candide-esque innocent to a lovable, but sharp realist. Plenty of bad things still happen to him: his tavern tables get delivered in all the wrong colors, his obnoxious, user family arrives just as he is finally making it big in the tourist trade; yet Craze has learned how to play hard. He has grown quite suave with women. For instance, he's able to make a strategic decision to forgo seducing the young lady of his choice in order to flatter and charm that girl's mother, who has planetary power and a massive crop of Wonder Ricklets, a sort of small bovine type herd that he wants in on. I enjoyed the scenes where we get glimpses of his sexual charm. One of the women is a Sprinkler, a blue-hued race that sloughs off mist and a continual drizzle that, on this dry and dusty moon of Pardeep definitely has its benefits!
I love Pax's inventive side: the way the characters' hair curls and swirls and has its very own life; the beautiful yet toxic plants of Photwit and the nanite-laced chocolates that one can control a subject's mind with when offered as a treat. M Pax has true imagination and humor, and the prose just keeps getting better and better. I'm a fan.

Another great entry in the Backworlds series

The Backworlds series gets better and better with each book. I love the way the character of Craze has grown and developed through the series, he's become quite a charmer here and a fun companion to have as we journey through the Backworlds.

As always I am in awe of Pax's imagination. You have to love the Wonder Ricklets! I am anxiously awaiting the release of Book 4 in a few months.
