The Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 has long been forgotten by most people. At the time, however, many foreign observers believed they were witnessing the long anticipated titanic struggle between fascism and communism with democracy caught in the crossfire. This book focuses on one of the most dramatic and tragic events of that conflict: the leveling of the sacred Basque town of Guernica on the late afternoon of 26 April 1937. Since then, historians have wrestled with the question of why the town was destroyed and by whom. Was it obliterated by a carpet bombing inflicted by the German Condor Legion as the Basques insist or torched by the Basques themselves who allegedly sought to throw the blame upon their Spanish Nationalist opponents? Although the destruction of Guernica occurred 78 years ago the incident still resonates throughout the Basque country. For Basques, Guernica is the wound in the heart that still separates them from their fellow countrymen who control Spain’s fortunes from Madrid. But for those who know little or nothing about the event, it is Pablo Picasso’s masterpiece they think of when Guernica is mentioned. His austere, black and grey painting has become the celebrated indictment of modern warfare, especially the bombing of civilian centers. As such, a copy of the painting guards the entrance to the United Nation’s Security Council chamber. Guernica was the first European town thoroughly leveled by incendiary and high explosive bombs which pointed the way to the frightful bombings of Warsaw, Rotterdam, Coventry, Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki during World War II. Guernica reminds us of the devastating potential of modern air power, which like Damocles’ sword still hangs ominously over a troubled and anxious world.

About the Author
Winston Carter received his MA in History from the University of California at Berkeley and studied Spanish civilization at the universities of Madrid and Valencia. Subsequently, he taught History part time at Santa Rosa and Chabot community colleges in California and Western Washington University. He spent most of his academic career teaching Government and World and U.S. History with the Department of Defense’s overseas schools in Vicenza, Italy and Nürnberg and Frankfurt, Germany.

Outstanding Overview

Lohse has done the church an invaluable service by providing this overview of Luther's theology. In the first part of the book, the author sets the stage for the remainder of the study with some preliminary chapters delaing with issues such as the historical and theological situation in the early sixteenth century and Martin Luther's early life.
The second part of the book is the most helpful in that it traces the development of Luther's thought historically in the context of his many debates, disputations and conflicts. From his marginal notes in Augustine to his debates with the antinomians, Lohse provides a good understanding of how Luther's thought took its final form.
The third part of the book attempts to approach Luther's theology from a more systematic perspective, dealing with it topically. It is divided into chapters on sola scriptura, reason and faith, sin, justification, the church, etc. Lohse provides some crucial insights into Luther's views on each of these doctrines in this section. The book concludes with a brief appendix on Luther's attitude toward the Jews - an important addition at the close of the twentieth century.
This book should be the standard reference on the theology of Luther for years to come.
